A fitness desert no more: Planet Fitness just opened a massive new location in the heart of Los Angeles' Black community, bringing Olympic lifting racks, battle ropes, and hydro massage beds to the corner of Crenshaw and Slauson.
This isn't your typical Planet Fitness. They've seriously upgraded their equipment game to serve both beginners and serious athletes. We're talking full Olympic lifting setups — squat racks, deadlift platforms, the works. Local high school athletes are already taking advantage, since getting access to school weight rooms can be tough.
General Manager Adrian Armendariz has seen some incredible transformations here, including one member who lost 350 pounds and elderly members ditching their canes. The location specifically caters to a community that's been underserved by mainstream fitness chains.
The Crenshaw District has long been labeled a "fitness desert" — plenty of small gyms, but none of the major chains that dominate other LA neighborhoods. This Planet Fitness changes that equation, bringing affordable fitness to an area where preventable diseases linked to obesity hit particularly hard.
The upgraded equipment strategy is smart. As Armendariz explained, beginners who started at Planet Fitness were getting stronger and needed more advanced options. Rather than lose them to other gyms, Planet Fitness evolved to keep them.
We're tracking over 2,400 Planet Fitness locations across the country. Known for their "Judgement Free Zone" philosophy and purple-and-yellow color scheme, they've evolved from a beginner-focused gym to serving everyone from first-timers to competitive athletes.
